Forest Service Sign

The Daniel Boone National Forest is comprised of over 700,000 acres of land in Eastern Kentucky.

Sunrise

We chose the Beaver Creek Wilderness Area of the Daniel Boone National Forest for a winter orienteering trip. Orienteering basically means no designated trails and a complete reliance on maps, compass, and the "occasional" help from a GPS.

Bigfoot

We did a bit of backtracking on this orienteering trip. Without the benefit of established trails, unexpected obstacles and impassable areas can be expected.

Cold Stream

Hundreds of miles of rivers, streams and creeks snake through the Daniel Boone National Forest. We had a couple of cold mid-winter wades through this stretch of the Beaver Creek.

Cave

We came across a surprising number of caves and rock shelters on our first hike here. Some of the caves in the park contain historic Native American paintings and other artifacts, though we didn't run across these on this trek.

Another Cave

There are over 3,400 miles of sandstone cliffs in Daniel Boone National Forest providing lots of great scenery and interesting formations.

Frozen Hammock

Bigfoot tested his cold weather hammock gear on this hike. Temperatures fell into the mid-teens overnight, but he faired pretty well.
